Chapter

Six

The Pack hit team found my trail before I’d made it a quarter of a mile from the crash site. By my estimation I was still nine miles or so from Rube’s, with no guarantee it’d be there when I arrived. His place tended to shift and move around at times, so you never quite knew where exactly you’d find it.

My ability to walk was getting better, but I still wasn’t fully healed. With at least a dozen Pack members on my ass, I was in no shape to take them all on. A couple, sure, but no more than that.

Better even the odds a little.

Where the Pack members were concerned, I felt about the same as I did toward Dad. They didn’t know what they were doing because of Eris’ influence, and I’d hate myself if I had to hurt one of them right now.

Er, most of them, anyway. Some of them I could do without, mainly those who didn’t think a female werewolf had any business running alpha over a pack. It’d be tempting to take a few troublemakers out before the curse was lifted, but I decided to resist the urge.

Instead, I’d do my best to repay them for that cable stunt they pulled, while ignoring that it was meant to decapitate me. Thinking about it did bring home how serious this was, though. If it came down to it, I’d do what I had to do to survive and save Dad.

With my legs getting stronger, I had two choices—I could either pick up the pace or set an ambush. Picking up the pace wouldn’t help much right now. Without the ability to move at full speed, I’d never lose this crew.

Ambush it is.

I found a nice little choke point where a valley narrowed between two steep slopes. It wasn’t perfect, but if I ran my trail through the saddle at least a couple would follow suit. It paid to be obvious, but not too obvious, so I allowed my bloody clothing to rub against some random plants here and there as I passed.

Once the trail had been made, I looped back and crested the eastern rise, opposite the full, orange moon so I wouldn’t be silhouetted. Then I pulled out my knife and I started sharpening the pole I’d grabbed earlier. Once I had a serviceable javelin, I found a few more thick young trees and made more. After that I hid with the spears nearby, and waited.

It didn’t take long for the vanguard to arrive, two trackers I recognized from the club. I let them pass, figuring I’d deal with them when they looped back. A cluster of five Pack members followed soon after them.

I knew all their names, but I chose not to think about it at the moment. They were just targets right now, obstacles to be dealt with. If I put names to their faces, they’d be that much harder to fight.

The head count for this group was actually a good thing. That told me they’d split up, so I wouldn’t be dealing with the whole team.
